Production monitoring blog 21st march - 3rd april

Last week I filmed my advert and started to edit it roughly. Everything from filming went right and ran smoothly apart from the actors were difficult to control for retakes of shots, shadows also became a problem. I used basic camera cinematography skills such as point of view shots, close ups etc...

Targets for this week:

Throughout all this week I will be focusing on editing my film until it is completed. I will do this by spending each lesson that I have this week in media editing I have to make sure that my computer is free for usage so that I do not have to waste time in starting anew.  The skills I will have to use are that of what I learned when learning to edit films such as things like what cuts are more effective to use or what if the chrome key will be effective to the audience. 

Possible contingencies:

I have to edit my film to complete it but problems that I may encounter are that of losing my work as it may not have saved properly to my disk or maybe not being able to get onto my computer for other people using it or it may be broken and I would have to start over.  If these things happen I will make backups on my memory stick to go to another computer if the one is Brocken also I will make different copies of the film on the computer if the work gets lost from not being able to save it then I will have a later copy of it.

Production monitoring blog 14th March – 20th March:

Last week I completed my treatment to full detail in which I planned and I also managed to complete my location recce but it is missing one picture which can be gathered in no it will be put into it when we get our folders back. I completed my storyboard too so I am ready to film my advert. I booked out a camera for the weekend successfully ready filming, but I did not manage to film as Saturday there was problems and on the Sunday my actors did not turn up.

Targets for this week:

For this week I plan to have filmed by Wednesday and also mostly edited by Friday as well as knowing what song to use in the background. I will have to have good planning skills to get my actors together to make sure that they come on the day and also need good camera handling and editing skills.

Possible contingencies:

I have to film my product on the Wednesday but the possible problems that I may encounter are that of my actors not turning up again or the weather being too bad to film in and will have to film yet another which does not give me that much time to edit the film. To avoid these problems I will check the weather for the Wednesday to make sure it is suitable and also I will make sure that the actors will turn up. 

Production monitoring blog 28th February - 6th March.

Progress:

Throughout that week I completed my mood board and came up with an idea and had help with making it into a doable advert. I started on my treatment which is completed. Also I have started my storyboard which needs to be completed as homework this week so that I can start filming either this weekend or next depending on the availability of camera. I also have finished my ideas outline which is where I got a brief idea from what I am going to use as my idea. Documentary planning sheet is also completed but I have chosen not to do a documentary for my product. Everything has gone to plan except the storyboard which I need to complete and everything ran smoothly. The only problem that I encountered was getting an idea to work with and to make it happen. 

Targets for this week:

This week I need to have completed is my storyboard and having a camera booked and also having actors definitely agree to the date and time of filming which will need to be planned also, I also need to gather more props other than cans and bottles I need to get a costume to which I could stick things to and to suit the mood of the advert. I also need to complete my schedule so that I know when the work is supposed to be completed for and to check whether I am on track or not or to see if any pieces of work are missing. The skill I will have to use is that of gathering people together for meetings to let them know what will be happening on the day of filming and whether they will be able to turn up or if they are busy.

Possible contingencies:

I have to book a camera out which may not go to plan as there may not be any left available for my proffered time and date of filming or when I book the camera out the weather may not be suitable for my product. If these things happen I will have to book a camera for a different date or book it earlier so that there will be some camera’s left, to get around the weather problem I will have to film shots that I need to have inside and do outside shots another time.

Sequencing and Editing.

In Final Cut Express I edited some shots of cars, to get these shots I went into the browser which is used to store footage and sequences which is where I got this footage from, viewer is for raw footage. I cut pieces of the sequences I wanted and placed them onto the timeline below which that is where most of the editing takes place, I used the tool razor blade on the timeline on bits of footage that I did not want and to make a cut to separate it from the rest of the shot which through that other images can be placed in-between them. Effects I used on this were such as fade to black which are good to use when ending a scene or the video in the case I did, others where things such as cross dissolve which work good when moving from one shot to another on a different location. Some effects that I placed between shots did not work, but to make this easier I should record a few seconds before the clip I want and after which allows the effects to work.

Capturing Digital Footage.

I set up a scratch disc on the computer that I use to capture and edit, to do this I had to create a folder and give it a distinctive name which then each time I opened Final Cut Express I had to select this file so that any work that I do on the sequences are all saved to one storage place this means that no work gets lost or tampered with. To capture footage from my tape to Final Cut Express I had to open Final Cut Express and then go to file then capture with the camera being plugged in set the camera to play/ edit mode which from there the footage is captured. Problems that occurred was with plugging the camera in whilst Final Cut Express was open which it is meant to be done while it is closed but this could make this easier is for me to remember to have Final Cut Express closed first.

Continuity filming.

Through the process of preparing and making a short film I had to do a lot of preparation such as coming up with an idea which was possible to film, storyboarding my idea was relatively fun and easy, to do my storyboard I just broke down my idea/ story shot by shot to make it easier to film and get each shot that is needed to make the film understandable. I used cinematography such as panning movement’s being slow to show the mood of being sad and to make an energetic scene the panning movement would be fast with lots of movement. Editing choices I have choose are to have each shot flow with each other and each cut to work with the mood of the scene and also in time with the background music. The camera was handled on a tripod instead of hand held or using a crane or track, using the tripod made it easier to make shots steady and not unsettled, also it gives you chance to be able to shoot steady smooth panning shots. Problems that occurred was the storyboard had too much to do where as we did not have enough time to do all that was written down, so we just took stuff out of the storyboard an made it shorter. Things I would do again to improve would be getting the shots exactly right and timed right so that editing and piecing it together would be made easier.
